The Planning Zoning Department consist of a full-time Planning and Zoning Officer and two contracted part -time Inspectors. The Planning and Zoning Officer is responsible for all technical work associated with Zoning Administration, Enforcement of numerous Town Ordinances, Issuance of Building Permits, Scheduling of Inspections, Sale of Cemetery Plots and like functions related to Planning, Zoning and Inspections. The Building Inspector and Electrical Inspector are responsible for performing all related inspections.
The Planning, Zoning and Inspections Department is responsible for overseeing orderly growth and development in the Town of Madison through the enforcement and interpretation of the following Ordinances:
The Planning and Zoning Officer accepts, reviews, makes recommendation and arranges meetings with the Planning Board or Board of Adjustment on all applications for Special Use Permits, Variances, Zoning Text and Map Amendments and Appeals of the Zoning Officer and/or Building Inspector. Information on the aforementioned applications can be found in our Zoning Ordinance included in this section or by contacting the Planning and Zoning Officer. The Planning and Zoning Officer also accepts applications for Certificates of Appropriateness (COA) from individuals who live in the Town's Historic District and desire to do exterior work on their home. Applications for COA's are forwarded to the Historic Commission for approval.
